Hockey Stars 2016 Awards Announced
The FIH has announced its Hockey Stars Awards for 2016 in a glittering ceremony held at Chandigarh’s Lalit Hotel. Hockey’ best and brightest were on display to celebrate an outstanding year for the sport that saw two first time winners crowned Olympic champions.
Belgium’s John-John Dohmen took home the men’s Player of the Year award with the Netherlands' Naomi Van As picking up the gong for the women. For Dohmen the award caps an outstanding year that cements him as on of the greats of his generation.
Van As put the icing on the cake of an incredible career as a player winning her second player of the year award.
The gold and silver medallists from Rio dominated the awards. Dohmen’s compatriot Arthur Van Doren was names men’s Rising Star award as the best U/23 player globally with Argentinean Maria Granatto picking up the women’s award. Olympic gold medallist Maddie Hinch was judged the best women’ goalkeeper with her male counterpart David Harte picking up consecutive awards following his win in last years awards.
Great Britain dominated the coaching awards with both the men and women’s trophies going to the team that guided the GB women’s side to Olympic gold. Danny Kerry won the title for his efforts as the teams head coach, while Karen Brown picked up her second award in two years as his assistant.
Umpires received recognition as well with German Christian Blasch and Laurine Delforge from Belgium honoured for there efforts with the whistle and their efforts to promote better umpiring with both colleagues and the wider Hockey community.
Surprisingly this is the first time the FIH has held a ceremony to announce their yearly award winners. It is hoped that the FIH will use the awards to lift the games profile by taking them across the hockey globe with a new venue each year.
